Griffins claim first female footy flag
The Australian National University Australian Football Club (ANUAFC) won their first women’s premiership last weekend, beating the Batemans Bay Seahawks, 44 to 8.
After 18 years in the Canberra Women’s AFL League, the ANUAFC Griffins clinched their inaugural flag after finishing top of the table at the end of the 2019 home-and-away season.
The Club’s premiership success comes on the back of launching Australia’s first dedicated women’s footy scholarship in 2017.
The ANUAFC Women’s Leadership Scholarship was initiated by the Club to celebrate the first AFLW season.
“We get applications from all over Australia, and the Scholarship has allowed us to attract amazing new talent to the Club,” said Club President Caitlin Roy. “We’d like to thank our Scholarship sponsors, SMEC and Geocon, as well as AFL Canberra and ANU Sport, for all their support.”
“The Australian National University is one of the world’s top universities, and the ANUAFC offers a unique program of sport, community and leadership to train future leaders. We welcome partnerships with like-minded organisations who want to get involved with Club,” said President Caitlin Roy.
Two Leadership Scholars, Alexandra Williams and Eloise McLean, took the field in the Grand Final, and helped the ANUAFC to a hard-fought premiership.
“These young women are incredible ambassadors for the Club, leaders on and off the field, in sport, career and study,” said Mr Brook Dixon, Managing Director of Delos Delta, one of the Club’s sponsors. “We’re very proud of the Club’s achievements, especially their support for the next generation of women leaders.”
Delos Delta is a management consulting company based in Canberra, who support the ANUAFC with sponsorship and pro bono consulting services. Two members the Delos Delta team, Anna Wilson and Eloise McLean, took home premiership medals for the ANUAFC Griffins.
Applications for the 2020 ANUAFC Women’s Leadership Scholarship will open in coming months. If you want to get involved with the Club please reach out to Club President Caitlin Roy by email, firstname.lastname@example.org
