Geocon partners with Summer Housing to provide quality homes for people with disability in Canberra

Leading Canberra developer Geocon has today announced a partnership with Summer Housing which will enable younger people with disabilities to access high-quality apartment living in Belconnen and Woden.

In Australia, over 6,200 people with disabilities under the age of 65 are forced to live in nursing homes due to a lack of appropriate housing options.

Summer Housing is a not for profit disability housing provider with a unique model that promotes inclusion and independence through integrating housing for people with disabilities in larger mainstream developments.

Summer Housing will acquire 20 apartments from award-winning Geocon across two developments in Canberra which will be specifically designed for people with high physical support needs. Importantly, an additional apartment will be made available in each development for use by on-site support workers, privacy, independence and importantly security for residents.

“Geocon is committed to creating inclusive and connected communities and we are proud to be partnering with Summer Housing to help deliver a solution for young locals living with a disability. Our vision at Geocon is to transform Canberra by developing vibrant precincts that can be utilised by all people in the community and this is just one way that we are doing just that,” said Nick Georgalis, Founder and Managing Director, Geocon.

Dan McLennan, Chief Executive Officer of Summer Housing said “There is an urgent need to significantly increase the range and scale of housing for people with disability across Australia and Canberra is no different.

Partnering with a company like Geocon, who has the technical know-how and experience to deliver purpose-built accommodation for people with needs provides certainty for Summer Housing and its future tenants. The amenity, design and location of the apartments together with the ability to access on-site support when needed will enable our residents to live as independently as possible, enhancing their health, well-being and participation in the community.”

Summer Housing’s apartments will be designed to achieve Platinum level certification under Liveable Housing Design Guidelines and meet High Physical Support design requirements under the NDIS.

All apartments will feature:
• customisable kitchens and bathrooms
• wheelchair accessible balconies
• home automation and communication technology capable of being customised to individual needs; and
• as structural provision for future installation of ceiling hoists.

The first 10 apartments will be located within Geocon’s Dusk apartments in Belconnen, due for completion in early 2020. Prospective tenants and their families can register their interest with Summer Housing at www.summerhousing.org.au/our-apartments/act
